HillView Counselling

for children, teenagers, families and adults

Our relationships with those around us impact on our quality of life.

Fostering good relationships helps us to feel connected and valued and also improves our feelings of satisfaction and happiness.  Sometimes we need help to get the most out of our relationships and our lives.

CHILDREN

Many children experience emotional, social and behavioural difficulties and can benefit from having a safe environment where they can be supported in exploring their feelings and worries and helped to understand them and find ways to better express themselves.
Support is available to help children to build resilience against adversities including bullying and develop other important life-skills such as relationship skills, conflict resolution strategies and grief management, as well as building self-esteem.

TEENAGERS

Adolescents are going through huge changes and, for many, this can be a time where they experience a rollercoaster of emotions, concerns, insecurities and uncertainties.  Having someone to chat to, in a safe, friendly environment, enables free expression of their concerns and can enhance self-understanding and foster inner growth.

FAMILIES

Helping families to understand each other’s needs can lead to a happier family environment.  Often, misunderstandings and miscommunication can cause rifts which can seem insurmountable yet, with guided counselling, skills can be developed in communication, conflict resolution, self-expression, and a better understanding of self, as well as others.

ADULTS

Adult life can be challenging and confusing and sometimes it’s hard to see a way forward. Having a non-judgemental, objective listener, can help to sort through fears and concerns and find ways to make positive steps forward.

COUPLES

Relationship counselling can assist in helping couples to better communicate and express themselves, leading to a better understanding of themselves and each other.

We can sometimes find ourselves in a deep valley and feel like we can’t see a way to get out.

By taking the hand of someone standing to the side, we can be lifted up to see the view ahead from the top of the hill, enabling us to find a way forward.

ABOUT US

Alison Hood BSW (Hons)
Alison Hood has an honours degree in Social Work and has had many years working with children and families.
Alison is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers and abides by their Code of Ethics.

Alison aims to help people to understand themselves better and for them to learn skills that will enable the building of stronger relationships with others.

Alison has a particular interest in working with children and families.  Studies have shown that children thrive when they feel loved and secure and understood. Yet children often have to deal with a variety of emotions that they don’t yet know how to deal with.  Crying, shouting, hitting and tantrums are some of the ways that children release their sadness, anger and frustration.  Alison aims to help children to learn how to manage these feelings, as well as helping parents in their relationships with their children. Teenage years also can lead to rifts in family relationships. Parenting is not easy and every family is different and Alison determines what will best help each family situation, so that each person within the family is able to be heard and better understood.

Alison has a broad range of experience working with children, teenagers and adults who have been living with emotional, social and/or behavioural issues.  Often these have been caused by difficulties with anxiety, attachment, self-esteem, friendships, bullying, school, health, grief and loss, trauma, parental separation, domestic violence, crisis, as well as many forms of abuse, including sexual assault.

Alison’s work has included many years working in a school environment, providing pastoral care for students and families, as well the whole school community, including teachers and parents.
